Common Ground Cafe's mission is to serve great food and drinks to the community, while serving as a training ground, readying individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities for the workforce.

Proceeds will go to support Progressive Directions (PDI) mission of providing services to its clients, to help them attain personal success through gaining pride, dignity and independence.

*Cafe Operations Manager Job Summary: *

The Caf-- Operations Manager's basic duty is to oversee the day-to-day operations of the Front of House. Provides support to individuals with developmental disabilities, enabling them to gain competitive employment. Caf-- Operations Manager is responsible for knowing and overseeing that all policies and procedures for Progressive Directions, Inc. are followed within the Caf--. Is a Key Holder for Caf--. Is punctual and maintains regular and consistent attendance.

*ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES* _include the following: in addition to other duties as assigned._

*Front of House*

* Oversee the operations and daily cash flows for the Caf--.
* Ensure high standard of cleanliness and order within caf-- by establishing, following, and enforcing sanitation standards and procedures.
* Greets customers and ensures excellent customer service standards are established and maintained.
* Oversee to-go and dine-in orders, telephone calls, and handling of customer complaints.
* Perform cashier functions to include taking customer orders, operating cash register, collecting cash and credit card payments, making change accurately and efficiently, issuing receipts to customers, maintaining cash control over register drawer, and verifying amounts are correct.
* Knowledgeable of Caf-- menu. Adjust orders as needed to accommodate customers with specific diet and health concerns.
* Ensure adequate inventory of front of house, including food and general supplies.
* Identify and report facility/maintenance issues as they arise.
* Attend designated staff meetings and special functions.

*POS system*

1. Oversee operation of POS system.

2. Train Caf-- staff on POS.

3. Input menu items, discounts, merchandise, and so forth.

4. Train Caf-- staff.

5. Ensure pricing is accurate and adjust as needed.

6. Oversee inventory management.

*Money handling*

1. Counting the register.

2. Prepare and deliver bank deposits.

3. Complete card and cash transactions. Making change.

4. Apply discounts (override for discounts).

5. Maintain adequate change denominations in cash drawer and request additional change.

6. Reconcile cash drawer and sales receipts.

*Manage and oversee Caf-- Crew Members and Front of House staff*

* Training/scheduling of Caf-- Crew Members
* Assign duties to front of house staff.
* Create checklist of daily duties for Caf-- Crew Members.
* Complete required documentation for Caf-- Crew Members.
* Ensure Caf-- is compliant with TN state laws and regulations relating to food storage, facility sanitation, and safety for health inspections that occur at least every six months by the state.
* Ensure quick and efficient communication between front of house and back of house.

*Job Coaching*

* Learnthe necessary job duties and teach Caf-- Crew Members how to properly carry them out.
* Provide on-the-job supervision until the Caf-- Crew Members can carry out the duties independently.
* Teach job related skills (sign-in/out, grooming, customer service, communication skills, etc.) to Caf-- Crew members.
* Advocate for the Caf-- Crew Member.
* Use good judgement in handling situations which may arise and notify Supported Employment Coordinator (SEC) and Community Engagement Coordinator of the situation.
* Document in writing areas of concern.
* Keep up with the Caf-- Crew Member's work schedule.
* Communicate with parents/conservators/guardians about scheduling, etc.
* Participate in training as required.
* Assist Support Employment Coordinator (SEC) in the job search as requested.

*Promote Caf--: collaborate with Director of Marketing*

Supervises Front of House staff, including Barista and Caf-- Crew Members, and carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's polices and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training Caf-- Crew Members, planning, assigning, directing work, appraising performance, addressing complaints, and resolving problems. Assists with the sorting, pricing, and ordering of the Caf--. Ensures that a safe and healthy environment is maintained for all parties involved.

1. High School Diploma or GED.

2. Valid Tennessee, Kentucky, or Alabama driver's license

3. Ability to read and follow directions.

4. Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

5. TB test within the last 12 months.

6. Satisfactory criminal background check and clear driving record

7. Ability/availability to attend and pass all training course offered and required of Department of Developmental & Intellectual Disabilities (DIDD), PDI, and TennCare Employment Community First.

8. Possess dynamic, engaging, and energetic personality.

9. Ability to multi-task along with a record of providing excellent customer service.

10. Ability to make an independent decision and/or to contact the supervisor for guidance.


This position requires a minimum of a High School Diploma or GED and restaurant, restaurant lead, management and/or equivalent experience. Successful completion of Food Service Training.

Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals, ability to read and write routine reports and correspondence. This person will need the ability to read and comprehend simple and complicated instructions, short/lengthy correspondence, and/or memos; ability to write detailed correspondence; ability to verbally communicate effectively.


Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions and decimals, and understand percentages; ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement: volume and distance.


Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out simple and detailed written or oral instructions: Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations. The person will need the ability to apply commonsense and understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; the ability to handle problems in a positive manner and find effective solutions or know where to seek assistance

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers, to handle objects, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to stand, walk, bend, sit, and reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. This position will require general cleaning, to include sweeping, mopping, dusting, and so forth of the Caf-- as well as moving and sliding furniture around. Walking most of the day and on your feet 90% of the shift.

Schedule may at times be outside of the normal 8-4 hours. Number of hours on the job varies according to Caf-- needs. The Caf-- Operations Manager providing services to Employment Community First clients must participate and successfully complete the competency-based course TRN Job Coaching & Consulting.
