SUMMARY PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for moderately complex engineering projects. Coordinates work within the scope of assigned projects to ensure objectives in terms of quality, cost, and time are met. Prepares project schedules and reviews cost estimates, compiles required cost and equipment information, and writes appropriation requests. Responsible for effective communication of engineering information among team members. Follows the structure of Safety, Quality, Project Management & Continuous Improvement Systems from concept through project execution. May supervise assigned technical team members and coordinates their work within the scope of assigned responsibilities. Serves as a resource to others as assigned, providing technical information and engineering recommendations that assist with projects.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

SCOPE:

Contributes to project identification and definition. Normally works under the guidance of a supervisor. Develops, implements and/or supports assigned technologies, products, and processes. Responsible for other projects as assigned by supervisor.

SUPERVISING OTHERS:

Primarily an individual contributor role; however, capable of leading a team in technical projects. May supervise non-exempt and hourly employees.

APPLICATION OF KNOWLEDGE:

Proven experience beyond education to support and deliver high quality products and processes through the application of engineering principles. Exhibits competency and begins to develop expertise in multiple engineering technologies. Performs work which involves conventional practice but may include a variety of complex features, such as conflicting design requirements, incomplete market requirements, unsuitability of standard materials and multiple project coordination.

JUDGMENT:

Independently evaluates, selects and applies engineering principles to product and process modifications. Exercises independent judgment to define project objectives and engineering / scientific approach. Assignments may require development of unclear objectives and require investigation of multiple variables.

QUALIFICATIONS

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

5+ years combined engineering experience.

EDUCATION AND DEVELOPMENT:

Bachelor of Science in Engineering, Math, or relevant Science or combination of education and experience. Responsible for ongoing development of technical and leadership competencies.

SPECIFIC DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities: Identifies and develops new material, design, and process technologies. Successfully scales solutions to production readiness to drive business value. Partners with internal and external resources to enable intellectual property protection as needed. Leveraged as an expert in the organization to provide direction in areas of expertise. The position is expected to understand and apply safe practices in line with safety policies.

  • Innovation
    • Seek out and generate innovative solutions for products and processes; evaluating new and novel ways to solve problems and demonstrate thought leadership.
    • Scope of influence spans internal manufacturing, engineering, product, and process development as well as external material and equipment vendors.
    • Direct prototyping, testing, and development efforts; identifying and managing needed resources (both internal and external) to rapidly advance development projects.
    • Leverage materials, mechanical, and process knowledge to create and coordinate effective test plans, apply problem solving logic and methods, and analyze test results.
    • Advance new material, design, and process solutions from initial concept through first-use implementation in production.
    • Technology Scout
      • Research and monitor emerging technologies for one or more of the following: composites, polymers, metals, coatings, insulated glass components and related manufacturing processes.
      • Advise key stakeholders in the business on new and changing elements in these categories. Advocate for advancement by providing insights into potential business value and benefit.
      • Partner Liaison
        • Cultivate strategic relationships with partners; ensuring activities add value to team's objectives.
        • Use appropriate communication methods and interpersonal styles to develop rapport.
        • Collaboration
          • Strong collaboration skills are necessary when prioritizing, planning, implementing and commercializing innovations.
          • Must be able to work across functional structure to achieve alignment and identify collaborative opportunities with stakeholders.

            Computer skills: 3D CAD, Microsoft Office applications. FEA and Minitab capabilities preferred.

            Technical / functional skills: Ability to develop prototyping, testing, and experimentation plans to evaluate viability of potential material, design, or process solutions. Working knowledge of the use and application of laboratory equipment. Familiarity with the application of test standards and ability to develop test methods where current standards are inadequate. Ability to correlate lab results with field or manufacturing process performance. Skill to conduct effective technical research in the advancement of current and new technologies.

            Certificates, licenses, and registrations: Lean Sigma Green Belt or Black Belt certification preferred.
